A general discussion of how to set up ipPulse to communicate through a modem to a paging company. This applies to version 1.10 or newer.

Problems and Symptoms

* Modem does not dial at all.
* Alphanumeric Paging does not work, numeric paging does work.

Modem Problems - No Dialing etc.

Things to check.

* Check your modem init string settings. Most modem problems can be traced to initialization problems -- see Modem Init String and Port Selection Setup below.
* Is your modem in use by another application, such as your connection to the internet?
If so, ipPulse needs access to a modem connected to a phone line--and that modem must not be in continuous use.
* Can you use HyperTerminal or similar to access the modem/phone line and successfully dial out?
If yes, then you need to check the modem init string and other setup items below.
If no, then you have a problem with your modem unrelated to ipPulse. Get your modem working with HyperTerminal, then come back and retry ipPulse later.
* Do you have the right TAPI/COM port settings for your modem in ipPulse Paging Setup? see Modem Init String and Port Selection Setup below.
* Is your modem in the list of TAPI (Telephony Applications Programming Interface) devices shown in the Paging Setup/Port Selection list? -- see Modem Init String and Port Selection Setup below.

Modem Init String and Port Selection Setup

This section applies to both numeric and alphanumeric pagers. To access the fields discussed below press Setup, then move to the Failure Alerts tab and press Paging Setup.

Modem Init String field. Here are your options:

* The default for this field is AUTO. AUTO tells the paging section of ipPulse to search your modem's INF file for the proper modem init string. AUTO will ONLY work if you have selected one of the TAPI selection types from the Port Selection list. AUTO will NOT WORK if you have selected a COM port number.
* Leaving the field blank. This option causes the program to use the previous init settings that were effected by the last program that used the modem.
* Enter your modem's specific init string. If you want to use numeric paging, check your modem documentation for the proper string to set it to factory settings. This is typically AT&F~ or similar. You must use the ~ character to represent a carraige return anywhere it is required in the init string and at the end of the init string. There is a list of common init strings for many types of modems in the ipPulse help file. Press F1 to access the help file. Another list is here.
If you are using an Alphanumeric pager, you must find out the baud rate that your pager access terminal expects to see -- typically 300 - 2400 baud. Then you need to check your modem documentation for the proper init string to set it for low baud rates, ie. 300 - 2400 baud, 7 data bits, even parity, one stop bit. The mode you should look for is Bell 212 compatible. No data compression and no error correction.

Port Selection field. Here are your options:

* TAPI. If this mode is selected, ipPulse will search and try to send the page through all compatible TAPI devices in your system.
* (your modem's name)|TAPI1. This appears in the list if ipPulse finds any compatible TAPI devices that it can use. The format is the name of your modem followed by the TAPI ID name, TAPI1, TAPI2, TAPI3, etc. Use this selection to force the use of a specific modem.
* COM port number.. If you know which COM port your modem resides on, you can select it here. If you use one of the COM port selections, the AUTO Modem Init String default setting will not work, you must use a specific modem init string for your modem.

Alphanumeric Setup Procedure

Alphanumeric pagers are notified using the TAP (Telocator Alphanumeric Protocol) protocol. ipPulse connects to the pager company access terminal much like dialing an ISP or BBS, then a series of messages are exchanged in Automated dump mode. The pager is notified with the message from ipPulse.

Your first step is to complete the Modem Init String and Port Selection Setup above. Next, you will need to setup other parameters. However, before you can set the parameters, there are some things you need to know first.

Things you must know to setup ipPulse to use an AlphaPager:

* Alphanumeric Pager terminal phone number -- you have to get this from your pager company.
* Pager PIN -- this is sometimes called a unit number and it identifies your pager--this is NOT a phone number.
* AlphaPager terminal baud rate(s). This is typically 300, 1200 or 2400. 300 is the most common in the US.
* Character count limit per message.

Once you have collected this info, you can go into setup of ipPulse and switch to the Failure Alerts tab. Press Setup Paging. Then follow these steps:

1. Select the Use Alphanumeric Pager radio button at the top of the window.
2. Set the Alpha Access Baud Rate to the baud rate. Enter 300 or whatever the paging company has told you the rate is.
3. Set the Character Counter Limit Per Message to the limit given to you by your company. 32 is a safe default.
4. Press the Setup Access Number and PIN button. Assuming you want to notify only one pager, enter your pager PIN in the Pager 0 field of the LEFT column. Enter your Pager Access phone number in the Pager 0 field of RIGHT column. Press OK.
5. Check the Log Modem Activity and Errors checkbox for debugging.
6. Now you can test it. Press the Send Test Page button and watch the status area to the right of the Hangup button. Watch your pager for results too.

If you have further problems, try using HyperTerminal to connect to the Alphapager access phone number. If you can connect, hit enter and look for an "ID=" prompt. If you cannot get access or you do not see ID=, then there is a problem with the pager company access port.

If you need to contact us further about this, please email a portion of the modem log file (press View Modem Log to get it) showing the failure, your exact type of modem and all the settings you are using on the Paging Setup dialog. Also, send us the info from the Setup Access Number and PIN dialog.
