Installation Problems

I have Windows 95, and when I run setup.exe I get a weird message like "Setup cannot establish DDE communications with Program Manager"--I'm not even running Program Manager!
Yes you are, it's now called the task bar at the bottom. To install Lineage Manager for Dogs, reboot Windows 95 and go to Start and choose run, then run setup.exe.

General Questions

How do I backup my dog pedigree info? Close LMD. Click on Start/Programs/Lineage Manager for Dogs/LMD Backup & Restore Utility. This utility will create a backup zip file with your data safely inside. **An alternative way of backing up is to save the entire installation directory/folder along with your data to a CDR.

I have just restored my LMD pedigree data from a CDR and now LMD crashes when it tries to open my data. The reason is CDR backups almost always mark all files saved on the CDR as "read-only". You have to change the setting on each file you restored from "read-only" back to normal. Do this by opening up Explorer to view your files (NOT Internet Explorer). Next locate lmd.exe on your hard drive. It should be with your .dta LMD data files. If you saved your .dta LMD data files elsewhere, you will need to work on those files as well. Select all the files in the folder that lmd.exe is located in, then right click to bring up a menu. Then select Properties to view the file properties. Assure that Read-Only is UNCHECKED. Do this for all files you restored from the CDR.

How can I email a pedigree printout? The best way is to print it out and scan it, then email it.

The only method LMD has for emailing a pedigree is one that sends the 5 generation pedigree as a text only (no graphics) file as an email message. Because it is only the text and not the graphics, it will not look as nice. If you want to try it, select a dog, press Printing, press Export 5 gen. Save the text file. Then after that is complete, you will be given the option to email the file. It will attempt to start your email system. If successful, the text file you just saved will be copied into the main part of the email message. Then you can view it, modify it; even email it to yourself as a test.

The other option is to get a screen capturing program and view a Print Preview of the pedigree, then try capturing the screen with the other program.

How do I stop Lineage Manager for Dogs from backing up my database every time I open a one?
Go to print options, first tab, right column, near the bottom, the check box marked enable autobackup. Note that this is the old method of backing up and we now prefer you use the LMD Backup & Restore Utility outlined above.

Why won't my champion's name print in red?

  1. For each dog that should show in red, edit the dog, go to the titles page (General information, Titles tab) and check the box marked "Print this dog in red".
  2. Press OK to save the info in the database. Do this for each dog you wish to see in red.
  3. Next, go to Database Manager, press the printing button, press the Options button and on the "Global Printing Options" tab, check the "Print Champion's names in Red" box on the bottom of the left hand list of check boxes.
  4. Press OK.
The dogs that you select to be in red in the Edit Dog/titles pages will now print in red and will print preview in Red under Windows 95.

The title I've selected won't appear at the front of the dog's name. What do I do?
For this example we will use Am.Can.Ch as the title.

  1. From Database Manager, edit any dog.
  2. Go to the titles tab.
  3. Select the Am.Can.Ch. title, then press the Delete Title button at the bottom in the Title Management area. You must delete it.
  4. Now, press the New Title button.
  5. Enter Am.Can.Ch. in the abbreviation edit box.
  6. Enter your description of the title.
  7. Check the box labeled "Title appears before dog's name".
  8. Press OK.
  9. Press OK or cancel to dismiss the edit dog dialog.
It should now put the title in the right place.
